Neste's PFAD traceability dashboard

PFAD is a processing residue from the refining of edible palm oil. Neste buys PFAD only from those suppliers that are committed to sustainable working practices and meeting strict sustainability criteria embedded in the regulation on biofuels. In April 2017, after listening to our stakeholders’ wishes, we committed to becoming the first in the world to reach full traceability with our palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD) supply chain. These efforts significantly surpass the current regulatory requirements for residue raw materials, such as PFAD, which require traceability to the point of origin, i.e. the palm oil refinery.

We have already independently mapped and validated 96% of the supplying mills in our PFAD supply chain and our suppliers report 98% traceability to mill on average. We have also evaluated each mill for environmental risks as part of our proactive approach to preventing deforestation. The chart below compares the area surrounding our supplying mills to over 1,700 other oil palm mills for environmental risk factors; 87% of our supplying mills are located outside of high risk areas. In 2018 we will begin working with our PFAD suppliers to evaluate each mill located in a higher risk area to ensure full compliance with our policies. This dashboard details traceability in our PFAD supply chain. To learn more about Neste's sustainability efforts click here.

Traceability
96% of our PFAD supply chain has been mapped
In April 2017, after listening to our stakeholders’ wishes, we committed to becoming the first in the world to reach full traceability with our palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD) supply chain to the palm oil plantations. These efforts significantly surpass the current regulatory requirements for residue raw materials, such as PFAD, which require traceability to the point of origin, i.e. the palm oil refinery. We currently have full traceability of the PFAD we use to the place of origin as the law requires. By the end of 2017, we had already identified and independently validated 96% of the mills in our PFAD supply chain and our suppliers report 98% traceability to mill on average. Due to the number of mills and complexity of the supply chain, some mills are still undergoing verification. We aim to have 100% traceability to mill by the end of 2018 and 100% traceability to plantation by 2020.
